Teacakes, the true name of an individually sized bread treat

It’s a teacake

Created

I need to clear something up.

It’s a tea cake.

I don’t care that large portions of Britain have independently decided it’s a roll, bap, bun, cob, batch, barm or whatever other nonsense they’ve come up with. Where I’m from, the round bread thing you put your sandwich filling in is a tea cake.

Yes, I know that elsewhere “teacake” means a sweet bun containing dried fruit.

That is a currant tea cake.

The distinction is right there.

This is one of those wonderfully stupid bits of British regional language where you can travel a relatively short distance and discover that everyone has somehow agreed on a completely different word for an object you’ve been naming without incident your entire life.

Nobody is confused about the object. Nobody needs the object explained to them. We just can’t agree what the bloody thing is called.

Language is great.
